Traditional Shaving: Enjoy a Better Shave, Save Money, and Save the Planet

A Life-Changing Discovery

You don’t need shaving foam or any other product to shave!

All you need is some warm water. Simply splash some warm water on the area you want to shave—no warm towels, no expensive products, nothing complicated—just water. Then, shave as you normally would. When you’re done, you might start questioning if shaving products are just a scam. HAHAHA

Surprisingly, it’s not painful at all.

In fact, I had a much better shaving experience and result.

  • Without foam, you can clearly see where you’re shaving.
  • No soap means you’re not drying out your skin.
  • No more irritation.
  • No more cuts
  • It’s a faster, simpler shaving experience.
  • And best of all—you’ll stop wasting money on shaving products!

I know it’s literally incredible, but give it a try—I beg you.

Though it’s not directly related to traditional shaving, I wanted to share this discovery first. Safety razors are actually better suited for shaving without foam compared to regular disposable razors, which I’ll explain later in this post. So, if you’re thinking about shaving without foam or other products, this might be another reason to switch to a safety razor and enjoy its many benefits.

Now, let’s see the reasons why a safety razor is a better option to regular razors.

Is It Worth Shaving with a Safety Razor?

Is It Cheaper to Use a Safety Razor?

Safety razors are in many ways superior to disposable razors.

One of the most well-known benefits, without doubt, is that it’s much more affordable. As someone who shaves every day and is always looking for ways to save money, I decided to switch from disposable razors to a safety razor—and it’s been a fantastic change! Along with other benefits, I’ve also saved a lot of money, since the only ongoing purchase I need to make is for blades.

And blades are extremely cheap.

Disposable razors can lead to a lot of wasted money over time.

While safety razors have a higher upfront cost, the long-term savings are huge. For example, I used to spend BRL 380 a year on shaving, but now I spend only BRL 80! It makes me think about how much money I could have avoided wasting if I had switched to a safety razor in my teenage years. So why not switch to a razor that can literally last a lifetime and stop throwing money away as soon as possible?

Yeah, safety razors can feel intimidating.

But with practice, they become easy to use.

Over time, you’ll gain practice and confidence, just like many others who have wisely switched from disposable razors to safety razors. Once you get past the initial learning curve, you’ll be really glad you made the change.

I won’t say it’s completely risk-free (disposable razors aren’t completely risk-free as well), but in my experience, there’s not much difference between shaving with a safety razor and a disposable one. The process is essentially the same, only you need to apply less pressure to the skin.

Why Safety Razors Are Ideal for Foam-Free Shaving

A safety razor makes it much more affordable to always shave with a sharp blade.

Disposable razors dull quickly because they are hard to clean and dry properly. Furthermore, when a disposable razor loses its sharpness, you need to buy a new one, which can be expensive and discourage regular use of a sharp blade. On the other hand, safety razors always provide a very sharp blade. Their blades are inexpensive to replace, and they are easy to clean and dry, so they stay sharp for longer.

Because safety razors require less pressure on the skin and allow you to always use a sharp blade, they are ideal for foam-free shaving.

By switching to a safety razor, you’ll save money not only on razors but also on shaving products.

Is Shaving With a Safety Razor Better?

Safety razors are not only more elegant, beautiful, durable, and economical than disposable razors, but they also offer additional benefits.

One thing I’ve noticed is that if I accidentally cut myself while shaving with a safety razor (it can happen sometimes), the irritation tends to go away faster compared when I would cut myself with a disposable razor (which would happen sometimes). This might be because the disposable razor I used to use was a multi-blade razor, which can create multiple small cuts simultaneously, leading to more irritation.

The cut is less deep, and irritation goes away faster. That’s what I notice.

Secondly, disposable razors clog very easily, and they’re difficult to unclog! Despite washing and tapping them in a sink full of microbes, they often trap some soap, and hair, and dead skin cells, and grease, and sweat, and sometimes even blood!

In contrast, safety razors are much easier to clean.

After shaving, you can remove the cap and blade, and sanitize them separately, making them more hygienic than regular razors.

And since safety razors are less prone to clogging, this speeds up the shaving process with a safety razor. If they do clog, a quick rinse under running water is enough to clear them. Plus, with two sides, you can simply flip the razor when one side clogs, reducing the need to stop and clean the blade.

In fact, I don’t even rinse the razor while shaving (but I shave every day).

These features can make shaving just as quickly as with disposable razors.

How to Get a Close Shave with a Safety Razor?

Using a safety razor without foam gives you a close, cut-free shave.

You can even shave against the grain without discomfort. Although I usually avoid shaving against the grain, I decided to test it myself and was surprised. Afterward, when I ran my hand over my skin, I couldn’t feel any hair. Your skin will be incredibly smooth, with no stray hairs left behind.

And just to be clear, my facial hair is not thin.

Give it a try and see the difference!

How to Choose Your Safety Razor

I’ll receive a small commission if you purchase any product through my links (at no extra cost to you).

I can recommend the one I use.

I use the Qshave safety razor with magnetic cover, and I have a good shaving experience. Compared to regular, disposable razors, I don’t see much difference in use. Of course, there is still a learning and adaptation process involved, but based on my experience, this safety razor provides a shaving experience similar to regular razors.

Key features:

  • Magnetic Blade Holder: The magnets and pins securely hold the blade in place, making it easy to sanitize and change the blade quickly. The magnet ensures the two parts of the razor stay firmly together, preventing any movement during shaving.
  • Balanced Design: The head is heavier than the handle, providing a good grip and balance during use.
  • Adjustable Blade Gap: You can adjust the blade gap to match your personal preference and the density of your facial hair.
  • Non-Slip Handle: Despite its appearance, the handle has a good grip and does not slip during use.
  • Durable Construction: It is made of zinc alloy and coated in matte chrome. According to Qshave, it is “resistant to corrosion and will accompany you for life”.

While there are cheaper, generic safety razors that often receive poor reviews, and more expensive ones that can cost $80 or more, the Qshave safety razor offers a good balance of price and performance. The practical magnetic feature is something you won’t find in more expensive models.

The razor also comes with:

  • Five blades
  • A cleaning brush
  • A disposal box for used blades (to prevent accidents)

You can purchase it from the official Qshave store on AliExpress.

Save Even More on Shaving by Buying in Bulk

Buying 1,000 blades in one transaction can reduce the cost to just USD 0.05 per blade.

However, imagine the waste if you bought 1,000 blades that don’t work for you. To avoid this, I recommend starting with smaller quantities from the top brands to find the one that suits you best. To help with this process, consider starting with a sample pack of assorted blades.

I’ll share some links below.

Then, once you’ve confirmed that a particular brand works well for you, buying in bulk becomes an effective way to save even more.

How Do You Make Razor Blades Last Longer?

If you enjoy saving money, you’ve probably considered sharpening dull blades to make them last longer.

While I haven’t tried this myself (not yet), it might be something you’re interested in exploring. I initially thought of using a regular whetstone but hesitated—”What if it doesn’t work?” I wondered. “I’d just be wasting money.”

After some research, I discovered a device specifically made for sharpening razor blades: the RazorPit.

Many people have bought it and left positive reviews.

The brand claims that this sharpener can reduce your razor blade costs by up to 90%. It uses patented sharpening and cleaning technology compatible with all types of blades and is made from recyclable materials. By combining it with bulk blade purchases, you could get nearly cost-free shaves.

You, your children, and even your children’s children will never need to spend money on shaving again. HAHAHA

Is a Safety Razor Right for Me?

Everyone’s experience with safety razors is different.

If you search through Reddit, you’ll notice two main opinions. One group mentions frequent cuts and razor burn, while another group says that they’ll never go back to regular razors. This shows that what works for one person might not work for another. Therefore, the only way to know if a safety razor is right for you is to give it a try.

I think some had negative experiences because they didn’t know the technique in this post.

And even if your first attempts don’t go perfectly as well, please don’t give up!

With practice, you’ll improve. I’ve achieved cut-free shaves with a safety razor, and you can too. Making the switch not only saves you a lot of money but also offers many benefits, as I and many others have experienced.

Disposable razors only benefit the companies that sell them!
